Playing around with citrus today while recipe testing for an upcoming private Zoom cooking class. Blood orange salad with shaved shallots, shaved fennel & arugula.

Citrus season is in full swing. It's the best time of year for fresh & fragrant lemons, limes & oranges, and the *only* time of year for specialty items like blood oranges, Meyer lemons, Sumo oranges, sweet limes, etc.

Now is the time to try your hand at marmalade, preserved lemons, candied peel, citrus curd, shaker lemon pie, the list goes on. Citrus is abundant and beautiful and is giving us a bright spot in a long & dreary winter.

I've always known that the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island was a culinary hotspot, but I have had rarely had the chance to explore it. This weekend was my opportunity.

Yes, we were here for a ski & snowshoeing adventure weekend, but for once we didn't stay on the mountain. Staying in the valley gave us the chance to delve into the culinary scene here, and I'm so glad we did!

From the amazing, from-scratch ramen at @nikkeiramenya to the addictive pizza and sourdough bagels at @jackknifepizza , to one of the best restaurant meals we've ever had, courtesy of @ilfalconeca , to the unplanned wine-tasting at Black Creek Winery (we bought some of their berry port) and the @bigdsbees honey stand - the food scene has been top notch!

We honestly barely scratched the surface. There are so many other wonderful food places to try. We cannot wait to come back. Special shout out to Big D's Bees unique Mountain Honey - we made a second trip today just to buy more - I am already dreaming of the Russian honey cake I am going to make! And extra special shout out to @ediblevanisle 's Facebook page for the excellent engagement and recommendations, and personal thank you kiss to @lettie_mo for telling me about Nikkei Ramen-ya (you were right, it was the absolute best).

The only time I tailgate : ski season during a pandemic! Swipe to the end to see a ridiculous photo of me getting VERY excited by our tailgate picnic.

Dave and I are spending the weekend at our local ski hill and didn't want to wait in long line ups at the (now very limited capacity) cafeteria, nor risk exposure in the eating area. So we used our awesome @nissancanada family of thermoses to bring hot soup and hot tea to the ski hill. We stopped midday for a delicious hot lunch and then hit the slopes again.

We have not done anything adventurous or "travel-like" in a long time, nor have we had a chance to get away just the two of us, so this weekend is much needed! Shout out to @mountwashington for excellent Covid protocols and even better snow conditions.

We just thought it was funny that when we dig them all out, they were all Nissans of different sizes 😂 Dave thought I should arrange them to look like a serious post; he even pulled the blanket out of the back seat (don't look too closely or you'll see the dog hair 🤣)
