My most liked posts of 2021, a year in review. I know that Best Nine has been replaced by video reels, but I'm not there yet. 😅 I still love this retrospective photo format.

2021 has given me lots to think about, and reminded me to be grateful for the people and things in my life that ground me, inspire me, lift me up, and soothe me.
.
My top liked photos from this year are a good representation of that! Family and friends are part of almost every photo, as are some local adventures and fulfilling work ❤️

The winning Christmas cookies of 2021 are these amazing Rye Molasses Spice Snaps from @aimeebourque of Simple Bites. I cannot rave enough about these - the texture, the flavour, the perfect spicing 😍

The hint of black pepper along with the whole rye flour from @truegrainbread remind me of our family's favourite German pfeffernussen; the molasses and ginger is Christmas in two bites; and the chewy/crisp texture is perfection.
.
Aimee has this posted on her feed and on her website. It's easy to look it up on her website Simple Bites. If you want to replicate my variation perfectly make the following four changes:
1) leave out the tonka bean
2) leave out the balsamic vinegar
3) double the black pepper
4) use melted browned butter instead of vegetable oil (SO GOOD)

This whole fish with pineapple sauce, fried shallots and fresh herbs was only one part of our meal tonight. A super delicious, home-made meal with friends, eaten slowly, course by course, over several hours. . . Exactly the evening I needed.

It's been a long autumn, friends, filled with too much work, too much rain, lots of stress, and not enough sleep. I've needed a chance to recalibrate and tonight was a good start.
.
The holiday season is upon us, my cooking classes are winding down, and I'm hoping for more nights like this. More opportunities for meaningful connections, more family time, and more slow paced meals (or anything slow paced, to be honest).

It's officially Canadian Thanksgiving today; our family celebrated yesterday and I (happily) did not take a single photo, nor even think to.

I was in the mood for photos this morning as I toured the garden, soaking it all in, marvelling at how beautiful it is this time of year. Plants are beginning to lay themselves to rest, but still giving so much life and beauty. The dahlias are gorgeous, my chard and kale (both of which I grew from seed!) are thriving, the herbs are still happy, yet so many other things are at their end.

The transformation at this time of year is almost unspeakably lovely to me. Pumpkin spice and turkey dinners are wonderful, but give me a garden turning slowly to hibernation, its winter greens getting crisper, its flowers giving us one last show, its perennials turning shades of red and brown, the mists and spiderwebs and frosty morning air - yes, many things are dying, but everything is full of promise. The promise of rest, of restoration, of eventual rebirth.
