It's the first day of toque weather!

I rarely post photos of myself on this platform - it's all about showcasing the food and the beautiful outdoors at @chefheidifink . But I love the colour and feel in this quick selfie I snapped early today on my way to work.
💗.
This has gotten me thinking about how I tend to hide behind the camera on this app, yet I have been front & centre for years in my business life, teaching cooking classes, giving demos, running culinary tours, etc. So, this photo is for those you who haven't seen me in months because of the Covid restrictions on my classes and tours.
😊.
For those of you who don't know me that well, here are eight things about me (I think that's the current trend, right? Eight things?)

1️⃣ I love fall: the crisp air, the beautiful colours, the harvest, the scarves & toques!

2️⃣ I work full time as an instructional assistant in the Culinary program at @camosun college. My specific job is to lead our student Food Truck, the @camosun_cuisine_machine as a culinary teacher to first year students, and community liaison to high school culinary students.

3️⃣ For over 20 years, I have been teaching cooking classes in various venues on Vancouver Island, including @thelondonchef , @camosunculinary @fairfieldcommunity @saanparksreccoms @mossstmarket and so many more.

4️⃣ Covid has put a wrench in my business activities, and I haven't found the energy to pivot. . . Yet.

5️⃣ I have two sons, aged 19 and 16, (contrary to popular understanding, teenagers need their parents' constant support almost as much as preschoolers do)

6️⃣ I don't really cook at home that much. A simple dinner most nights and maybe some baking every second weekend. I do enough cooking at work! The only time I cook a lot is if I am developing a recipe or working on a blog post.

7️⃣ I dislike the texture of mushrooms - although I love their flavour, I will rarely eat them, unless chopped very fine.

8️⃣ I grew up here on the west coast of Canada and hope it will always be my home.

Quince galette for Canadian Thanksgiving.
I made this lovely galette today with some of the quince I got last week. It was the perfect finish to our Thanksgiving harvest meal tonight.
🌾.
All the food I used in our meal was grown, produced and harvested locally. I bought most of the vegetables and pie fruits from the @mossstmarket with a few extra from my garden ; the potatoes and chickens were grown on Vancouver Island and purchased at @redbarnmarkets ; the flour for the pie crust was from my local grain CSA (wheat grown in BC); the butter was from the Fraser Valley.

Among many other things, I am thankful for the place we live and the bounty the land and sea provide. I am thankful for farmers and stewards of the land. I am thankful for harvest time and all the hard workers who make our world a better place.

Last of the cherry tomatoes from my small garden, here on top of tonight's salad. Just a quick snap of something that brings me joy.

My garden is very small, but I was able to give it love and attention this year, in a way that I haven't had time to for years, and the garden paid back in dividends of pleasure and produce.
🌱.
Did you grow a garden this year? Was it new to you or have you had a garden for years? I used to garden quite a bit, but having two jobs and two kids pushed the garden down the priority list. Not sure why I let that happen when I love it so much.
🌞.
I'm settling for a winter garden of kale, chives, and quiet nothings. I'm already looking forward to working the soil next spring.
