For a short time in July, there is a magical overlap of all the local fresh berries! Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and cherries ALL in peak ripeness at the same time. It is the BEST. And I make the most of it by mixing them together in as many recipes as possible. My most frequent (and honestly most simple) recipe is turning my regular breakfast into delicious All The Berry Power Muesli

I get excited about this season because I'm old enough to remember a time when these fruits did NOT overlap in their local availability. Local strawberries were only available in June, then cherries and raspberries in early July, then blueberries in late July. One after another ONLY, unless you bought imported Sometime in the last 15 or 20 years, their growing seasons have converged, due to the development of ever-bearing varieties, early- and late-ripening varieties, and different farming practices. And I am here for it.

I'm taking time today to think about what it means

I'm taking time today to think about what it means to be Canadian, to remind myself of the colonial history that makes it possible for me to call this beautiful and abundant land my home.

The discovery this year of unmarked graves at Canada's former Indian residential schools has come as no surprise to me, and should not have been a surprise to any of us. We know the history. Yet I'm ashamed to say that in years past, I have been able to celebrate Canada Day in all its flag-waving, fireworks-having excitement without thinking critically of our colonial past, not its consequences for present day indigenous peoples.

The good news is that I see our stated Canadian values of acceptance, cultural diversity, and reconciliation at work; many people around me doing the learning and the work as best they can. The bad news is that I see many people who (in the nicest terms possible) still have not started trying to learn nor to understand, who deny, or worse, justify (!), our violent history and the systems we still have in place.

As @anisetozaatar so eloquently says, Reconciliation is a gift offered to us in good faith. Let's not waste this opportunity. Today is for grieving and reflection. I hope we can build a new Canada that holds all of its people in love, acceptance, and support.
